TN Professionals and Citizens of Canada and Mexico

TN Professionals and Citizens of Canada and Mexico

The TN classification was created for citizens of Canada and Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement (“NAFTA”), which became effective on January 1, 1994.  Individuals must be citizens of either Canada or Mexico to be employed in TN nonimmigrant status.

To be eligible for TN status, a citizen of Canada or Mexico must have a job offer in one of the 63 professions enumerated in the Appendices to NAFTA.  See the list of the 63 professions at http://www.nafsa.org/_file_/amresource/8cfr2146.html.  Each listed profession requires specified minimum educational or experience requirements. Canadian nationals may apply for TN status at U.S. Ports of Entry while Mexican nationals must schedule an appointment at a U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate to apply for TN visas.
